MagmaTech Limited has been awarded the prestigious 2018 Queen’s Award for Innovation. The award was made on the Prime Minister’s recommendation and approved by Her Majesty the Queen. It recognises the market-leading innovations that MagmaTech has developed for super low energy buildings. The unique patent protected and BBA approved Teplo range of low thermal conductivity wall ties were judged worthy of the highest accolade that any UK organisation can achieve for product development and innovation.
Teplo wall ties are manufactured from continuous basalt fibres; an Advanced Composite Material that is 70 times more thermally efficient than steel. When used to join the two leaves of a cavity wall, this material virtually eliminates cold bridging across the insulated cavity.
In reaction to the news, MagmaTech Managing Director, Ben Williams, said: “This is a proud day for our company. To be recognised in this way with the UK’s leading innovation award is a great achievement and a brilliant platform for our future. The self-builders, architects, engineers, developers, clients, energy consultants, and builders that have specified and used the Teplo range are the true innovators. Over many years now they have created outstanding buildings, proving that traditional skills and building methods can deliver extremely high levels of comfort, quality and energy efficiency.”
The Teplo range now includes the Teplo-BF for traditional masonry cavity walls, the Teplo-L-Tie for a connection between timber, in-situ masonry, in-situ concrete and steel and the recently launched Teplo-BFR specifically for resin anchoring in to a range of substrates.
Teplo has been used in numerous ground-breaking buildings, including the UK’s first masonry cavity wall Passiv Haus and first Zero-Carbon retrofit. Recent notable projects include the Postal Museum in London which used the Teplo range to maintain a stable internal climate to house historic artifacts of national importance and the University of Leicester’s Centre for Medicine, at 13,000 m2, the largest non-domestic Passiv Haus in the UK to date. Noting the importance of the Passiv Haus standard, Ben said: “Studies now show that these buildings are performing as intended with no performance gap from their modeled design. The standard ensures quality and comfort, with constant warm and even temperatures, no mould, no condensation or draughts and all this with a fraction of the energy cost.”
The Teplo range is marketed and distributed through an exclusive agreement with the UK market leader in wall ties, Ancon Ltd. This effective collaboration has been recognised with joint Queen’s Award success. Noting the importance of the strategic partnership, Ancon Ltd Managing Director, Stuart Maxwell, said: “MagmaTech is a highly innovative and trustworthy strategic partner. Since the start of our collaboration back in 2009, MagmaTech has provided Ancon with first class support, maintaining excellent product quality and service. MagmaTech has positively embraced our desire to extend the Teplo range and ensured new, fully tested and approved products were fast-tracked to market. I’m delighted that our partnership has been recognised with a joint Queen’s Award and look forward to building on this success in the future”.
MagmaTech continues to invest in Research & Development dedicated to new and improved connection solutions for super low energy buildings not only as a key way to reduce carbon emissions but also to improve the comfort of our buildings.
The Lord-Lieutenant of the County, Her Majesty The Queen’s local representative, will present the Award to MagmaTech later this year and a royal reception will also be held at Buckingham Palace this summer.
